This is not recent news, but thought you might be interested anyway - I just came across it recently.
Some time ago Plastic Logic sponsored a design competition, and you can see some of the winners with a UK Design school, and they generated a number of ideas including some eReader concepts, at PlasticLogic's Life Is Flexible contest web page.
