The Business Week list of best inventions this year highlights this "ATM for book" machine that combines a mono laser printer, with a color laser printer (for covers) and a mechanical perfect binding "robot" to create a book-on-demand printing machine.
If you follow the link to the OnDemandBooks.com company homepage you can find material (including videos of it working) dating from 2003 (we knew this wasn't a new idea) so I'm not quite sure why it's on the list of Business Week for 2007.
By using a combined color/mono printer and downsizing the binding mechanism this could be squeezed into a reasonable sized package and then could maybe fit in some larger bookshops.
